The complex interactions between immune and nonimmune cells relating to persistent intestinal inflammation.

This article points out the interplay in the intestinal system between  immune, epithelial, endothelial, mesenchymal, and nerve cells, and also states that the dysfunction of any component of this highly integrated mucosal system may result in pathological inflammation.
