Curcumin and Alzheimer’s disease potential.

In researching curcumin’s effects on the amyloid β (Aβ) accumulation, oxidative damage, and inflammation associated with Alzheimer’s disease, this study investigates whether its efficacy in Alzheimer’s disease models could be explained by effects on Aβ aggregation. Their findings include: “Curcumin was a better Aβ40 aggregation inhibitor than ibuprofen and naproxen. […] When fed to mice with advanced amyloid accumulation, curcumin labeled plaques and reduced amyloid levels and plaque burden.” It concludes by suggesting a rationale for curcumin use in clinical trials for preventing or treating Alzheimer’s disease.
